Ysgol Bro Edern win the EFL Trust Utilita Football Girls Cup
On Thursday 24th October 2019, the highly anticipated EFL Trust Utilita football Under 13s Girls Cup took place in Cardiff City’s House of Sport. The football tournament was delivered by Cardiff City FC Foundation in partnership with New Directions Education. It aims to improve girls’ confidence, promote participation in sport and engage children under 13 in leading healthier and more active lives.
The tournament is an exciting and enjoyable event, encouraging healthy competition between local schools. Kelly Storer, Regional Manager for New Directions Education, commented that “we are delighted to be able to once more support this competition. I am personally overwhelmed each year with the quality of talent we see on the pitch, and the real sense of sportsmanship between the competing teams. Female football is making major strides in 2019 and we are proud to support the ambitions of Welsh schools in contributing to it.”
This year, 27 all-girls teams from 16 different secondary schools across 7 Local Authorities took part in the action-packed one-day tournament. This was an amazing turnout and a record number of participating players, hinting at a very bright future for girls’ football.
The winners of this tournament are awarded the opportunity to represent Cardiff City FC in the regional finals that will be taking place at Bristol Rovers FC in the new year, with the potential to play in a grand final at Wembley Stadium. The stakes are high, and this is a worthy goal for many aspiring young female football players.
Each of the 6-a-side teams showed fantastic sporting ability and inspirational teamwork throughout the event. The tournament saw an all Welsh-Medium-School final with Ysgol Bro Edern and Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg setting high standards as they battled it out to win the trophy. New Directions Education would like to extend many congratulations to the girls from Ysgol Bro Edern, who triumphed and won the Girls Cup in style and will now go on to represent Cardiff City FC at the next stage.
Congratulations also to the runners up from Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg and well done to all other teams involved. Our team of Account Managers will now coordinate the certificate presentation at each school, commending them on their attitude and commitment to sport and excellent behaviour on the day. We are proud to be a corporate partner working closely with Cardiff City FC Foundation on such a prestigious tournament with a strong message at its heart.
