Teaching Assistant – PRU

Do you have experience working with students with SEMH needs? Do you have an ability to forge working relationships with hard to reach students? If you are looking for an exciting new opportunity, then New Directions wants to hear from you. New Directions is proud to be working with a well respected PRU setting in Manchester that is looking for a teaching assistant on a longer-term basis. This role would suit a passionate educator with experience in similar teaching assistant roles or as a Youth Worker, Sports Coach, Support Worker or Mentor. A strong ability to forge working relationships with hard to reach students is essential – as is the ability to deescalate challenging behaviour with students. Experience of supporting teaching and learning is desireable but not essential.

Responsibilities of the role included but are not limited to:

  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be able to build strong relationships with students and staff.
  • To support teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Be encouraging and supportive.
  • Have a positive attitude towards teaching and aiding children’s development.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the student.

Job Specification:

  • Supervise and provide learning support for students in small groups and on a one to one basis.
  • Support teaching and learning – at primary level.
  • Assist with the development of individual education and behavioural plans setting challenging expectations for pupils to achieve learning goals.
  • Establish trusting relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs and personalities.
  • Encourage pupils to interact with the class and engage in activities.

Person Specification

  • Have experience working in the care, youth work, coaching or education sector
  • Have a strong understanding of SEND – specifically SEMH
  • Experience of de-escualting challenging behaviour
  • Be outgoing, fun and engaging
  • Willing to support children of all abilities and needs
  • Have experience of behaviour management and deescalation
  • Have a positive and ambitious attitude to learning
