Climbing the Wall at Ellwood Community Primary School
As part of Eco-Schools, the Eco Team at Ellwood Community Primary School entered the ‘Re-Invent the Wheel’ competition organised by The Gloucester Bike Project.
Recycle for Gloucestershire Schools and Gloucestershire Bike Project joined forces and asked schools to enter their festive competition by decorating old bike tyres with scrap materials. 19 primary, secondary and special schools entered the competition with materials ranging from old CDs to clothes, bottle tops and polystyrene.
The tyres were exhibited to the public to raise awareness of how everyday materials can be reused and recycled, the tyre exhibition was a great success. Friends & family then had to go on-line to vote for the best design from all the schools entries. Ellwood came joint 1st and won themselves a re-conditioned bike!
Spurred on from their success and as one bicycle can not be shared between all the pupils, the eco team decided to donate their bike to the schools fundraising efforts for a ‘Traversing Climbing Wall. The traversing wall has been requested by the schools council which is made up of pupils. The bike was the star prize in a raffle held by the school with all raffle ticket money going towards the fund for the traversing wall.
Hearing about the schools fundraising efforts and the generous decision of the pupils to donate the bike Jennifer Lambert, Account Manager at New Directions Education who has a close working relationship with the school decided to support their efforts with a donation. Jennifer commented ‘ the children have been working very hard holding cake sales to try and raise money for the traverse wall, when I heard of the very generous donation made by the pupils to donate the bike to the school I felt compelled to help. I I look forward to the grand unveiling the school has planned for the wall and I am especially looking forward to having a go’
