The Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of English to lead the English department at a well-regarded secondary school in Urmston. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and dedicated professional who is passionate about driving academic success and inspiring a love for English literature and language across the school. The role is to start ASAP. We expect the role to go permanent after 12 weeks of supply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management: Provide effective leadership for the English department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning are maintained.
  • Curriculum Development: Oversee the development and implementation of an engaging and innovative English curriculum that meets the needs of all learners.
  • Staff Development: Lead and support the professional development of the English department staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Student Achievement: Set high expectations and monitor progress to ensure students achieve excellent outcomes at all key stages.
  • Teaching Excellence: Teach English to a high standard, providing an inspiring learning environment that encourages students to reach their full potential.
  • Resource Management: Manage departmental resources efficiently and ensure the effective delivery of the English curriculum.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with senior leadership and other heads of department to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the school.
  • Assessment & Reporting: Ensure the accurate assessment, tracking, and reporting of student progress in line with school policies.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Essential.
  • Educational Background: A degree in English or a closely related subject.
  • Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a leadership role within an English department, ideally as Head of English or Second in Department.
  • Teaching Expertise: A track record of delivering outstanding English lessons and achieving excellent student outcomes.
  • Communication & Leadership Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills, with the ability to inspire both staff and students.
  • Passion for English: A deep passion for English language and literature, and a commitment to fostering a love for the subject among students.
