Do you have experience working with students with SEMH needs? Do you have an ability to forge working relationships with hard to reach students? If you are looking for an exciting new opportunity, then New Directions wants to hear from you. New Directions is proud to be working with a well respected SEMH Provision in Manchester that is looking for a SEMH Learning Support. This role would suit a passionate educator with experience in similar roles such as Youth Worker, Sports Coach, Support Worker or Mentor. A strong ability to forge working relationships with hard to reach students is essential – as is the ability to deescalate challenging behaviour with secondary aged students. Experience of supporting teaching and learning is desireable but not essential.

We have a range of FREE CPD training courses, from Safeguarding to Autism Awareness to Team Teach, which will teach you the relevant skills and attributes necessary for supporting children in our schools. We will also accept Health & Care, Social Care, Youth Worker and Coaching backgrounds!

Responsibilities of the role included but are not limited to:

  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be able to build strong relationships with students and staff.
  • To support teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Be encouraging and supportive.
  • Have a positive attitude towards teaching and aiding children’s development.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the student.

Job Specification:

  • Supervise and provide learning support for students in small groups and on a one to one basis.
  • Support teaching and learning – at GCSE and Functional Skills level;
  • Assist with the development of individual education and behavioural plans setting challenging expectations for pupils to achieve learning goals.
  • Establish trusting relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs and personalities.
  • Encourage pupils to interact with the class and engage in activities.

Person Specification

  • Have experience working in the care, youth work, coaching or education sector
  • Have a strong understanding of SEND – specifically SEMH
  • Experience of de-escualting challenging behaviour
  • Be outgoing, fun and engaging
  • Willing to support children of all abilities and needs
  • Have experience of behaviour management and deescalation
  • Have a positive and ambitious attitude to learning
