Job Description

New Directions Education are currently seeking an empathetic and committed SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a school base din Everton and make a positive impact on the lives of our students. As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health needs. Your primary responsibility will be to provide tailored support, both inside and outside the classroom, to help these students manage their emotional well-being, behaviour, and academic progress. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies to implement strategies that support each student’s individual needs.

Responsibilities of the role included but are not limited to:

  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be able to build strong relationships with students and staff.
  • Be encouraging and supportive.
  • Have a positive attitude towards teaching and aiding children development.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the student.

Although the role is based around education support, due to the children’s personal needs and behaviours they require consistent mentoring, motivating and advising, as well as some counselling, so their well-being can remain stable meaning they can achieve much more in their education and work towards an more independent future.

Behaviours displayed by the children can be challenging so applicants must be prepared to practice De-escalation and calming techniques, as well maintaining an empathetic approach and understanding behaviours stems from other problems. candidates from care, sports, psychology, criminology, sociology and youth work backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Job Specification

  • Have experience working with children, or adults, with additional needs
  • Hold a L2 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Able to support children of all abilities.
  • Have a positive and ambitious attitude to learning.
