…why can’t we recruit in Bristol?
Our team are on the hunt for a Recruitment Consultant. We are looking for someone to join our Bristol operation to add even more success to our very brilliant team…but we are struggling to find the right person.
With a population of 449,300 (yes I have been on the government statistics website) – of which 306,300 are of a working age, I have to ask the question, WHY can’t we find someone?
We chose Bristol as a home for our team a few years ago; we love the city – the culture, the food, the music…the night life. We have established a real presence in the region and have a wonderful list of candidates and clients we work to support within the social care sector. The office is central (right next door to Temple Meads) and the pay is good.
I am sat scratching my head about how best we can ‘sell’ our job to a brilliant vibrant community of people and showcase how much we offer as a team. I’ll start with the obvious – our benefits. For a recruitment company (an industry that hasn’t always been at the top of the ‘must-work-for’ tree) we are really competitive. We encourage learning – NVQs, Management Qualifications, industry specific courses…the lot. We have a health cash-back scheme – you want your teeth whitening or a session with a chiropractor – we’ll pay! We have a Christmas savings scheme with a 3% cash back incentive (sounds a long time away now…but wow is the November pay packet a happy one).
Our holiday entitlement is generous and it rises after two years’ service. We do a cycle-to-work scheme (Bristol is the biking capital of England is it not?) and we support staff on an IVF journey with time off for treatment.
Crikey, we are so generous 97% of our staff said they would recommend working for New Directions in the last staff survey! Oh and we won ‘Best Company to Work For (under 250 Employees)’ at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation IRP Awards in 2016.
The team itself – New Directions Social Care are a bunch of winners…and in many ways wonderful misfits. Such is our reputation that we have been named ‘Community Team of the Year’ at our own annual company conference – nominated by our colleagues from across the organisation. Oh yeah – the annual Company Conference – day out in Cardiff on the business, a day of celebration, good food, great company and for those who wish – a beverage or two.

It is challenging but rewarding, it’s infuriating but manages to fulfil the people who work within our team. It’s aspirational and it poses opportunity after opportunity.
We know that Bristol is a home for creative minds, for passion and enthusiasm and making the city a better place, a more sustainable community. So this is my blog, my plea – share the hell out of this and help us find a gert lush individual who can complete our Bristol posse. We will welcome them with open arms and a bright future.
